RESUMO

Disinfecting footbaths are used to treat and prevent interdigital dermatitis (ID) and heel horn erosion (HHE). However, many disinfectants are disadvantageous for the environment and, as an alternative, washing of the feet has been introduced. Our aim was to investigate the effect of water footbaths (trial 1), footbaths with CuSO4 (trial 2), automatic water flushing (trial 3), and water flushing followed by disinfection with a glutaraldehyde-based compound (trial 4) in 4 randomized controlled clinical trials performed in a freestall dairy herd of approximately 45 Norwegian Red cows. At trimming before and after each trial, hind foot diseases, hardness of the claw horn (in D-units), locomotion, and cleanliness of the claws were recorded. Before each trial, the cows were divided in comparable study and control groups, based on prevalence of ID and HHE, parity, and days in milk. Using a transponder-regulated gate, the study groups were led through a footbath (trials 1 and 2) or an automatic washer (trials 3 and 4), whereas the control groups were left untreated. Each trial lasted 3 mo and the curative effect in diseased cows and the preventive effect in cows with healthy feet on ID, HHE, and ID + HHE were analyzed. In trial 2, a preventive effect of CuSO4 on HHE compared with the untreated cows was observed. During trial 1, 100% (11/11) of the treated cows with ID got better and 22% (2/9) without ID became diseased, whereas 92% (11/12) of the treated cows with ID + HHE got better and 38% (3/8) without ID + HHE became diseased. During trial 2, 69% (9/13) of the treated cows with ID got better and 11% (1/9) without ID became diseased. During trial 4, 19% (3/16) of the untreated cows with ID + HHE got better and 71% (5/7) without ID + HHE became diseased. In trial 3, no significant effects on ID, HHE, or ID + HHE were revealed. In trial 2 (CuSO4), the treated cows' claw horn was harder after the trial compared with the controls (D-unit difference: 13.25). In trial 3 (stationary water flushing) the treated cows' claw horn was softer after the trial when compared with the controls (D-unit difference: -15.66). The CuSO4 footbaths were useful to prevent HHE and indicate that automatic stationary flushing with only water had no beneficial effect on ID or HHE. The claw horn of cows walking through CuSO4 became harder and the claw horn of cows that had their hind feet flushed with water became softer compared with the controls.

The aim of this study was to assess infectious foot diseases, including identification and characterization of Dichelobacter nodosus and Treponema spp., in herds having problems with interdigital dermatitis (ID) and heel horn erosion (E) and in control herds expected to have few problems. We also wanted to compare diseased and healthy cows in all herds. The study included 14 dairy herds with a total of 633 cows. Eight herds had a history of ID and E, and 6 were control herds. All cows were scored for lameness, and infectious foot diseases on the hind feet were recorded after trimming. Swabs and biopsies were taken from the skin of 10 cows in each herd for bacterial analyses. In total, samples were taken from 34 cows with ID, 11 with E, 40 with both ID and E, and 8 with digital dermatitis (DD), and from 47 cows with healthy feet. Swabs were analyzed for identification and characterization of D. nodosus by PCR, culture, virulence testing, and serotyping. Biopsies were analyzed by fluorescent in situ hybridization regarding histopathology, identification, and characterization of Treponema spp., and identification of D. nodosus. Interdigital dermatitis was the most frequent foot disease, with a prevalence of 50.4% in problem herds compared with 26.8% in control herds. Heel horn erosion was recorded in 34.8% of the cows in problem herds compared with 22.1% in control herds. Dichelobacter nodosus was detected in 97.1% of the cows with ID, in 36.4% with E, in all cows with both ID and E, in all cows with DD, and in 66.0% of cows with healthy feet. All serogroups of D. nodosus except F and M were detected, and all isolates were defined as benign by the gelatin gel test. Treponema spp. were detected in 50.0% of the cows with ID, in 9.1% with E, in 67.5% with ID and E, in all cows with DD, and in 6.4% of those with healthy feet. In total, 6 previously described phylotypes (PT) of Treponema were detected: PT1, PT3, PT6, PT13, and PT15 in cows with ID, PT1 in a cow with E, and PT1, PT2, PT3, PT6, and PT13 in cows with both ID and E. One new phylotype (PT19) was identified. The epidermal damage score was higher but the difference in inflammatory response of the dermis was minor in cows with ID versus those with healthy feet. Fisher's exact test revealed an association between ID and D. nodosus, and between ID and Treponema spp. Logistic regression revealed an association between both ID and E and dirty claws (odds ratios=1.9 and 2.0, respectively). Our study indicates that D. nodosus, Treponema spp., and hygiene are involved in the pathogenesis of ID.

This study was part of a cross-sectional project on freestall housing, and the aim was to compare locomotion and claw disorders in freestall dairy cattle herds with slatted concrete, solid concrete, or solid rubber flooring in the alleys. The final population for studying claw disorders consisted of 66 dairy herds with 2,709 dry or lactating cows, whereas the population for studying locomotion consisted of 54 herds with 2,216 cows. All herds used Norwegian Red as the main breed. The herds were visited by 15 trained claw trimmers one time during the period from the beginning of February to summer let-out onto pasture in 2008. The trimmers assessed locomotion scores (LocS) of all cows before trimming. At trimming, claw disorders were diagnosed and recorded in the Norwegian Claw Health Card. Estimates describing locomotion and claw disorders in the hind feet were identified by use of multivariable models fit with LocS and each claw disorder as dependent variables, respectively. Herd nested within claw trimmer was included in the model as random effects. The odds ratio (OR) of having LocS >2 and LocS >3 was 1.9 and 2.1, respectively, on slatted concrete compared with solid concrete. Fewer cases of dermatitis were found on slatted than solid concrete (OR=0.70) and a tendency was observed for fewer heel horn erosions on slatted concrete than solid rubber (OR=0.47). Hemorrhages of the white line and sole were more prevalent in herds housed on slatted and solid concrete than in those housed on solid rubber (OR=2.6 and OR=2.1, respectively). White line fissures were also more prevalent in herds housed on slatted and solid concrete than in those housed on solid rubber (OR=2.1 and OR=2.0, respectively). Double soles were more prevalent on solid concrete than solid rubber (OR=4.4). However, sole ulcers were less prevalent in herds with slatted and solid concrete than solid rubber (OR=0.39 and OR=0.53, respectively). Fewer corkscrewed claws were found on slatted concrete than both solid rubber and solid concrete (OR=0.60 and OR=0.44, respectively). More white line crossing fissures were recorded on slatted and solid concrete than solid rubber (OR=3.6 and OR=3.1, respectively). This shows that solid rubber flooring was favorable when most laminitis-related lesions were considered, whereas slatted concrete was favorable for infectious claw lesions and corkscrewed claws but not for locomotion.

As part of a cross-sectional study of Norwegian Red Cattle, associations of lameness, lesions at the tarsus, claw shapes, claw lesions, and claw trimming with milk yield were examined. Fifty-five tie-stall herds and 57 free-stall herds were sampled by computerized systematic selection, and 2,665 cows were trimmed and limb and claw disorders recorded. After exclusions, 2,599 cows were included in this study. Monthly recordings of milk were extracted from the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System. Most claw lesions were mild (score 1). The prevalence of moderate and severe lesions (score 2 and 3) did not exceed 5% for any of the lesions. Associations with test-day milk yield were identified using regression analyses (Proc Mixed) with repeated measurements within lactation and herd as random effect. Lactation curves were fit to visualize differences in changes in milk yield throughout the lactation. Milk yield was generally higher in cows with lesions at the tarsus, heel-horn erosions, and hemorrhages of the white line and the sole than in cows without these lesions, whereas cows with dermatitis yielded less than cows without dermatitis. Cows in lactation 1 with corkscrewed claws had reduced milk yield, whereas cows in lactations 2 and above had increased milk yield compared with cows without corkscrewed claws in respective lactations. Cows in lactation 1 yielded 0.47 +/- 0.15 kg and cows in later lactations yielded 0.51 +/- 0.15 kg more milk on test days after claw trimming than they did before when adjusted for days in milk. In this study, where most disorders were mild, the most evident results were higher milk yield in cows with lesions at the tarsus, heel-horn erosions, and hemorrhages of the white line and the sole than in cows without these lesions. Cows yielded more milk after claw trimming than they did before trimming.

As part of a cross-sectional study of Norwegian Red Cattle, associations of lameness, lesions at the tarsus, claw shapes, and claw lesions with reproductive performance and production diseases were examined. Fifty-five tiestall herds and 57 freestall herds were sampled by computerized systematic selection and 2,665 cows were trimmed and limb and claw disorders recorded by 13 specifically trained claw trimmers during the late winter and spring of 2002. After exclusions, 2,583 cows were included in this study. Most claw lesions were mild (score 1). Prevalence of moderate and severe lesions (score 2 + 3) did not exceed 5% for any of the lesions. Hazard ratios for independent variables were identified using Cox regression analyses incorporating herd as a random effect in a positive stable frailty model. Wounds and swellings at the tarsus were associated with more clinical mastitis [hazard ratio (HR) = 4.0] and teat injuries (HR = 2.5). Moderate and severe heel-horn erosions in first-lactation cows were associated with increased calving interval (HR = 0.60). Moderate and severe hemorrhages of the sole in first-lactation cows were associated with decreased interval from calving to first service (HR = 1.6) and moderate and severe hemorrhages of the sole were associated with more milk fever (HR = 8.6). All hemorrhages of the sole (scores = 1, 2, and 3) were associated with more reproductive hormonal treatments (HR = 2.3). All sole ulcers in first-lactation cows were associated with longer interval from calving to last service (HR = 0.59) and longer calving interval (HR = 0.61), whereas sole ulcers in older cows were associated with longer calving interval (HR = 0.62). All sole ulcers also were associated with more milk fever (HR = 4.8) in all cows. Moderate and severe sole ulcers in older cows were associated with increased interval from calving to first (HR = 0.35) and last (HR = 0.37) service. Moderate and severe white-line fissures in older cows were associated with increased return rate from previous insemination (HR = 2.4). Our study shows that claw disorders are associated with poorer reproductive performance and some production diseases.

We assessed the prevalence of claw lesions, abnormal claw shapes and lameness in relation to most-recent claw-trimming routines in Norwegian dairy herds housed in tie stalls and free stalls. Equal-sized groups were randomly sampled from both tie and free stalls in each of the three most animal-dense regions in Norway. The study population consisted of 2551 cows of the Norwegian Red breed housed in 54 tie stalls and 52 free stalls. Fourteen educated claw trimmers performed claw trimming and recording of claw lesions once during the spring of 2002. A multivariable model including cluster effects and individual-cow factors was fit for each claw lesion and abnormal claw shape. In tie-stall herds with routine trimming 39.9% of the cows had one or more lesions or abnormal shapes in front or hind claws versus 52.8% in herds with no routine trimming. Hind-claw results in tie stalls with concrete stall base: herds trimmed occasionally had more haemorrhages of the white line (OR=2.8) and corkscrewed hind claws (OR=3.6) versus herds trimmed routinely; herds never trimmed had more heel-horn erosions (OR=2.6) versus herds trimmed routinely and less haemorrhages of the white line (OR=0.3) and the sole (OR=0.2) versus herds trimmed occasionally. In free-stall herds with routine trimming 76.8% of the cows had one or more lesions or abnormal shapes in front or hind claws versus 68.9% in herds with no routine trimming. Hind-claw results in free stalls with concrete stall base: herds never trimmed had less haemorrhages of the white line (OR=0.3) and the sole (OR=0.3) versus herds trimmed routinely; and also less haemorrhages of the white line (OR=0.3) and white-line fissures (OR=0.3) versus herds trimmed occasionally. Hind-claw results in free stalls with rubber-mat stall base: herds trimmed occasionally had less heel-horn erosions (OR=0.5) and more dermatitis (OR=5.4) versus herds trimmed routinely. The routine claw trimming performed in Norwegian free stalls has not had the desired effects on claw lesions and abnormal claw shapes. Routine trimming in tie stalls, however, seems to have prevented claw disorders.

Approximately 88% of Norwegian dairy cattle are housed in tie stalls. Free-stall housing will be implemented for all cattle within 20 years. This means that most existing barns have to be rebuilt in the near future. We designed our study to estimate the prevalence of claw lesions in Norway and to reveal possible differences between tie stalls and free stalls. Fifty-five tie-stall herds and 57 free-stall herds were sampled by computerized systematic selection and 2665 cows were trimmed by 13 claw trimmers, during the late winter and spring of 2002. The claw trimmers had been taught diagnosing and recording of claw lesions. Environmental factors, management and feeding routines also were recorded. Forty-eight percent of cows housed in tie stalls had one or more claw lesions versus 71.8% in free stalls. Prevalences recorded in the hind claws were: 4.2% of the animals had dermatitis in tie stalls versus 5.7% in free stalls; 7.9% versus 38.0% had heel-horn erosions; 7.3% versus 13.6% had haemorrhages of the white line; 11.7% versus 20.4% had haemorrhages of the sole; 2.8% versus 3.2% had sole ulcers and 5.5% versus 9.7% had white-line fissures. Most lesions were mild. A model was designed to estimate cluster effects within herd and within claw trimmer. The cluster effect within herd was significant for all lesions. The cluster effect within claw trimmer was only significant for heel-horn erosions in front and hind claws and for white-line fissures in front claws. Agreements between some of the claw lesions were revealed. The study confirms that in Norwegian dairy cattle, most claw lesions are more prevalent in free stalls than in tie stalls.

Approximately 88% of Norwegian dairy cattle are housed in tie stalls. Free stall housing for all dairy cattle will be implemented within 20 years. This means that the majority of existing stalls will be rebuilt in the near future. Fifty-seven free stall herds of the Norwegian Red breed were randomly selected and 1547 cows and 403 heifers were trimmed by 13 claw trimmers during the late winter and spring of 2002. The claw trimmers had been taught diagnosing and recording of claw lesions. Environment, management- and feeding routines were also recorded. Fifty-three herds had concrete slatted alleys while 4 had solid concrete. Thirty-five herds had concrete as a stall base, while 17 had rubber mats, 2 had wood and 3 had deep litter straw beds. The prevalence of lameness was 1.6% in hind claws. Models for lameness and claw lesions were designed to estimate the influence of different risk factors and to account for the cluster effects within herd and claw trimmer. Detected risk factors for lameness were: parity three and above and narrow cubicles; for heel horn erosions: lactation stage around 5-7 months after calving and solid concrete alleys; for haemorrhages of the white line: lactation stage around 3-5 months after calving and solid concrete alleys; for haemorrhages of the sole: parity one, lactation stage around 5-7 months after calving and short cubicles, for white line fissures: slatted concrete alleys; for asymmetrical claws: parities two and above and for corkscrewed claws: solid concrete alleys. The prevalence of lameness in heifers was low, however 29% had one or more claw lesions. Heifers that were housed in pens or free stalls had more heel-horn erosions, haemorrhages of the sole and white-line fissures than heifers in tie stalls. As new free stalls are being built, it is important to optimise the conditions for claw health.

RESUMO

A pathoanatomical and radiographic investigation of limbs from slaughtered cows is presented. The reason for slaughtering was in all cases lameness or other limb-abnormalities. Only lesions distal to carpus/tarsus were investigated because the limbs are cut in these joints in the slaughterhouse. The total number of limbs was 180. The most important lesions were aseptic periostitis/ostitis in distal phalanx, arthrosis in the distal interphalangeal joint, laminitis, pododermatitis circumscripta and erosio ungulae. A pathoanatomical description was done of periostitis/ostitis in distal phalanx and arthrosis in the d.i.p. joint which were the most frequent lesions. A biochemical investigation of synovial fluid from d.i.p. joints is also presented. Periostitis/ostitis in distal phalanx and the serious cases of arthrosis in the d.i.p. joint were both distributed in the same manner as laminitis in the different digits (Figure 1, 2, 10 and 14). The lateral hind digit and the medial fore digit were most frequently affected. It is questioned if the clinical diagnosis of laminitis often is used when the cows actually are suffering from these two lesions. On the other hand it is the authors opinion that chronic laminitis not always conveys rotation of the distal phalanx, but that the disease often results only in periostitis/ostitis in distal phalanx. Periostitis/ostitis in distal phalanx and arthrosis in d.i.p. joint were correlated to the shape of the fore hooves to estimate certain etiological aspects (Figure 16 and 17). Arthrosis in d.i.p. joint was more often seen in assymetrical hooves, hooves with short toe/overgrown bulb and in long/overgrown hooves than in normal hooves. The same result was found for periostitis/ostitis in lateral distal phalanx, while the medial distal phalanx was equally affected of this lesion at different hoofshapes.
